At KEY2026, with Italia Solare, our CTO Fabio Domenico Amico shared GreenGo’s experience on the agrivoltaics panel, focusing on the greener side.
Agrivoltaics (AgriPV) can play a pivotal role in Italy’s energy transition by adding significant new solar capacity while keeping farmland productive, helping to reconcile climate targets with rural economic viability.
It directly addresses the “land-take” concern by showing, through national land-use figures, that Italy has large areas of agricultural land not currently used or abandoned, and that the land footprint required for the 2030 solar build-out is comparatively modest.
Achieving around 50 GW with a strong rooftop contribution (50%) would require roughly 40,000 hectares, about 0.2% of Italy’s surface and around 1% of unused agricultural land.
During the discussion, particular attention was given to the distinction between an agrivoltaic project that is “authorised” and one that is truly “ready-to-build”, given the technical specificities and regulatory complexities of this application.
AgriPV was highlighted for the quality of its design and on-the-ground delivery: from selecting the right agricultural partner to agronomic coherence, shade management and the seasonality of construction works.
