GreenGo secures authorisation for two new BESS projects, adding 80 MW of storage capacity in Calabria and Puglia
After the first project already authorised in Calabria in 2024, the capacity authorised by the Italian developer-IPP rises to 129.5 MW with an energy contribution of 516 MWh eligible for MACSE in the Southern zone
11 marzo 2025 - GreenGo takes a further step in the realisation of its multi-technology pipeline with the authorisation from the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) for two new energy storage plants (stand-alone BESS – Battery Energy Storage System), reaching a total of over 0.5 GWh of buildable storage capacity in Southern Italy, eligible for the MACSE, whose first auction will involve the South and Islands.
The two new approved storage systems are:
- Montagna (Calabria, Catanzaro): 30 MW with a storage capacity of 120 MWh
- Tagliata (Apulia, Foggia): 50 MW for a 200 MWh storage cycle
From 2025, Italy will be one of the most attractive markets in Europe for investments in storage systems, thanks also to remuneration tools such as the MACSE, whose first auction will be launched by TERNA Spa on 30 September, which favours long-term contracts for the development of storage capacity with BESS technologies. According to Aurora Energy Research’s analysis, the country currently ranks first among the most competitive destinations for investors in the BESS sector, along with the UK and Germany.
Fabio Amico, member of the Board of Directors who has followed GreenGo’s industrial development, commented: “After our first AU BESS with Cuvelli, today we strengthen GreenGo’s presence at the upcoming MACSE auctions. Cuvelli, Tagliata and Montagna represent our first major batch of BESS projects, totalling around 130 MW. These initiatives are located in the vicinity of other RES plants that are extremely close to existing Terna substations, important nodes of the national electricity grid for the development of renewable energy plants. The rapid authorisation process, which was completed within two years after the submission of the applications, testifies to our ability to build strategic energy infrastructures in a competitive timeframe. Our goal is to participate in the first MACSE auction with the highest number of projects: so far we have 3 plants, but there could be further surprises to strengthen our position as well as backup strategies in the medium term”.
With these new projects, GreenGo strengthens its position as a key player in the Italian energy transition, consolidating a multi-tech pipeline integrating renewable solutions and advanced storage systems for Italy’s energy future.
To date, GreenGo’s pipeline has reached 85 renewable projects in 11 regions totalling 1.82 GW, with a total of 800 MW at an advanced stage of approval and a remarkable track record with more than 560 MW of approved/RTB projects, of which 40 MW are under construction.
GreenGo also expects to reach a pipeline of 2.5 GW by 2025 by launching new initiatives in Northern Italy for more than 700 MW in the coming quarters and implementing even inorganic growth strategies by maximising its ability to scout and select initiatives with a high success rate.
Storage systems are a strategic element of GreenGo’s energy transition and development model. Batteries make possible to store energy generated by photovoltaic, wind power or other renewable sources and then release it at times of higher demand. This significantly improves the reliability of the electricity grid, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and making a decisive contribution to the decarbonisation of the Italian energy system.
About GreenGo
GreenGo, founded in 2018 as a start-up, has rapidly reached significant milestones, led by Giuseppe Mastropieri and driven by the exceptional skills and strong dedication of its constantly growing team of high-profile professionals and managers: the company now has more than 50 employees and collaborators, as well as exclusive agents on the national territory.
The partnership with the Eiffel Essentiel fund, launched in 2022 with a capitalisation of 7 million euro and renewed with the 15 million euro equity bridge in 2023, has accelerated GreenGo's growth, leading the company to position itself as a leading player in the Italian and southern European panorama of the development of utility-scale RES plants, in addition to pursuing independent energy production, the primary objective of the current industrial plan.
From September 2023, GreenGo has resided in the new green hub S/PARK - Sustainability Workplace, located in via G. Matteotti 31/2 in Bologna. The structure, desired and conceived by Fimm S.R.L., represents a significant redevelopment of an architectonic site of artistic and urbanistic relevance and stands as a reference point for the Italian green economy, hosting the Group's activities and opening up to companies, professionals, institutions and citizens.
