GreenGo: 120 MW of storage authorised with the "San Sostene" BESS project in Calabria

Following the Montagna (30 MW), Cuvelli (49.5 MW) and Tagliata (50 MW) projects, the authorised storage capacity rises to 249.5 MW. For GreenGo, the energy contribution eligible for the first MACSE auction is 998 MWh in the South and Sicily.

GreenGo, an Italian Independent Power Producer based in Bologna and a leader in the development of renewable solutions and utility-scale storage systems, announces that it has obtained the Single Authorisation for the BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) project in San Sostene (CZ), a 120 MW power and 480 MWh energy storage capacity infrastructure, one of the most significant currently authorised in Italy.

The stand-alone storage system will be connected to the 150 kV SE San Sostene electrical node in Calabria and will interface bidirectionally with the national grid, charging during hours of peak renewable energy availability and returning it during peak demand periods.

A successful case history: M&A and rapid development

San Sostene is an emblematic case history for GreenGo. Acquired in 2024, GreenGo then managed the engineering and authorisation development, transforming it in less than 18 months into a fully approved asset, with authorisation granted 13 months after the application was submitted.
In industrial terms, the operation marks a clear acceleration: with San Sostene, GreenGo brings the share of BESS systems authorised in the last six months to 200 MW, and the total number of projects authorised to 250 MW, demonstrating its ability to combine strategic insight with the capacity to act quickly and with a presence in the most important areas for the development of the Italian storage market.

Alberto Piva, Business Development and M&A Director at GreenGo, emphasises:

"San Sostene is a clear example of how an M&A transaction, guided by a vision of industrial development, can generate concrete value in a short time. In fact, in just over a calendar year, we obtained the Single Authorisation, transforming the investment into a strategic asset perfectly positioned on the network. This result confirms the soundness of our approach to scouting and execution, while strengthening GreenGo's competitive positioning ahead of the MACSE auctions."

San Sostene

Fabio Amico, CTO and Partner at GreenGo, adds:

“With San Sostene, we are consolidating GreenGo's presence in the storage sector, bringing the total of BESS projects already authorised to around 250 MWp and strengthening our ability to participate in the first round of MACSE. This result demonstrates not only the speed and efficiency of our technical and authorisation teams, but also the industrial vision that guides us in the development of strategic energy infrastructure and storage, including through the development of hybrid solar and photovoltaic plants combined with BESS storage solutions, also for the development of proximity solutions for industrial compounds."

GreenGo's journey in storage has taken a clear leap forward in less than two years. Following the first authorisation and the first BESS acquisition between March and April 2024, the company has rapidly expanded its storage portfolio to over 400 MW in total, more than half of which are authorised projects. With San Sostene and the projects already authorised in 2025 in Calabria and Puglia, the BESS pipeline has reached a level of maturity that places GreenGo among the most competitive players in Italy ahead of the MACSE auctions, alongside leading European markets such as the United Kingdom and Germany.

The project is one of the first to have been given the green light through the new ministerial portal permitting.mase.gov.it (code AU no. 17), pursuant to Article 1 of Decree Law 7/2022. This development marks the transition to a faster and more digitised authorisation process, with GreenGo at the forefront in terms of its ability to promptly exploit the tools introduced by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security.

Storage systems are an essential component for the decarbonisation of the country: they allow energy produced by renewable plants to be stored and released when needed, ensuring system balance and continuity of supply. Through the consolidation of its BESS portfolio, GreenGo is now a key player in the Italian energy transition, capable of combining industrial development, technological innovation and strategic vision.

To date, GreenGo's total pipeline stands at 1.73 GW, spread across 75 projects in 12 Italian regions, with 693 MW already authorised/RTB and 40 MW under construction.

About GreenGo

GreenGo, founded in 2018 as a start-up, has quickly achieved significant milestones, led by Giuseppe Mastropieri and driven by the exceptional skills and strong dedication of its constantly growing team of high-profile professionals and managers: the company now has more than 50 employees and collaborators, as well as exclusive agents throughout Italy.
The partnership with the Eiffel Essentiel fund, launched in 2022 with a capitalisation of €7 million and renewed with a €15 million equity bridge in 2023, has accelerated GreenGo's growth, positioning the company as a leader in the Italian and southern European landscape of utility-scale renewable energy plant development, as well as pursuing independent energy production, the primary objective of the current business plan.

Since September 2023, GreenGo has been based in the new green hub S/PARK - Sustainability Workplace, located in Via G. Matteotti 31/2 in Bologna. The facility, designed and developed by Fimm S.R.L., represents a significant redevelopment of an architectural site of artistic and urbanistic importance and stands as a reference point for the Italian green economy, hosting the Group's activities and opening up to companies, professionals, institutions and citizens.
